August
2006 - Double success this year for MYJO member, Philip Achilles.
Philip
became the World Youth Solo Harmonica Champion in Germany this
year. Closer to home, Philip was also awarded the Birmingham
International Jazz Festival Starbucks Young Musician Award at
the end of July.
Philip
is also a member of MYJO on Alto Sax as well as a talented piano
and double bass player.

AWARD FOR MYJO MD
MYJO
Musical Director, John Ruddick has been awarded an honorary
Doctorate from the University of Birmingham for his services
to music and music education.
All
our congratulations go to John and his family for this terrific
recognition of his work with MYJO over the last 25 years

May
2006 - DUTCH BIG BAND CONTEST. After our recent tour of
Europe over the Easter time, MYJO returned once again to the Netherlands
to defend the Dutch National Big Band Contest which we won in 2000.
Again the band succeeded and congratulations go also to Tasha Buxton
who also won the Drummers' Prize. Aside from a cash prize, the band
also was awarded the Dik Trom Trophy. Click here

2006 - 'Twist Of The Wrist'. The new MYJO CD 'Twist
of the Wrist' is now out! Either click the email link to buy
your copy £12 incl. P&P or come and see us at a concert
where CD's will be available for sale direct.
We
think you will enjoy this exciting album, which unlike recent
CD's features the band exclusively. The tracks are taken from
our current concert repertoire, and contain some great ensemble
playing and fine solos

March
2005 - The
Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra has won the 2005 BBC Big Band competition
for a record 6th time in the senior section (11th time overall). This
completes an unbeaten run of 20 years in this prestigious contest.
In
addition, MYJO also achieved success in the contest with the awarding
of the Outstanding Musician Award given to Trumpeter Percy
Purseglove, the Don Lusher Trombone Prize given to Andy
Derrick and for the second time Natasha Buxton has won
the Kenny Clare Drummers prize.
The
band was featured in the All Winners Concert which was recorded in
Birmingham on May 21st. It was broadcast on BBC
Radio 2 on Monday 30th May at 9.30pm.
